You've surely heard of Fisherman's Friend candies... and their strong flavor leaves no one indifferent. Nor do their name, wrapper, or logo. Why does it feature a fishing boat?

It all began in 1865 in the fishing town of Fleetwood, England. Fishermen in the region had to embark on long voyages in harsh weather conditions and often suffered from respiratory problems, coughs, colds, and bronchial problems. A young pharmacist from the city named James Lofthouse invented a highly effective treatment to combat these problems and help the fishermen on their long voyages. It was an extremely strong liquid containing menthol and eucalyptus. It was so concentrated that it helped relieve the respiratory problems the fishermen suffered in such low temperatures.

However, this liquid was transformed into small lozenges, much easier to transport and take. The relief was such that these lozenges became a favorite among Fleetwood fishermen, who even named them Fisherman's Friend.

The popularity of these lozenges began to grow, and demand for the extra-strength lozenges that relieved coughs and respiratory problems began to increase. Soon, the Lofthouse family began traveling to neighboring towns to sell their products. A short time later, given their huge success, they began exporting to other countries, until today, Fisherman's Friend candies are available in more than 100 countries.
